“Welcome to the real world, she said to me condescendingly”-John Mayer
Talk about a slap in the face. John Mayer hits you with these lines to begin the first song on the first album of what becomes a brilliant career. What’s funny is that this song catapulted him out of his very real upbringing into super stardom. And so the story goes.
When I showed up to SMU, these words were running through my head. This was the beginning of the rest of my life. I was responsible, liable, and in charge of myself. FREEDOM! Sounds like a great thing right? But like Spiderman’s uncle says, “With great power becomes great responsibility.” I have been given the opportunity to do great things. And I can. And I will.
I’m in the real world. Sometimes it’s like a smack in the face. But this real world, if I play it right, is going to catapult me into the wide-open future.

I thought this was a good post. Its funny how you can relate to a lot of lyrics, and definitely this one by john mayer. It has been a real slap in the face coming to college with all this freedom, and after the day I had to day Im gonna need some Ice. I bombed two tests and have about 500 pages to read. Why am I so behind if Im working so hard. I guess it really is how you spend your time. Freedom isn't as fun as it sounds anymore
John Mayer has become a very influential artist. I agree it's been hard so far in college with freedom. I even wrote a blog about my struggle with it. It's just how you choose to spend your time and what effort you decide to put towards it. Freedom is still fun, it's just a lot of work that comes along with it.
